Empowered Partners eCourse: Guidance + Support for Partners of Transgender, Non-Binary & Gender-Questioning People

Get the guidance and support you need to nurture yourself and your relationship while you offer meaningful support to your partner.

How would your experience of your partner's transition be different if you felt...

less confused and more informed?

less isolated and more connected?

less uncertain and more confident?

less fearful and more empowered?

It's possible with the right support.

Empowered Partners is focused on you.

Having a partner begin gender transition can be isolating and confusing.
It can also be amazing and transformative!

So many of the available resources about gender transition focus on the person transitioning, so you may be wondering how and where you fit into the equation. Empowered Partners is focused on supporting you, the partner of a transgender, non-binary or gender-questioning person.

Empowered Partners encourages you to support your partner while nourishing yourself with the resources you need to thrive through this transition.

In Empowered Partners, you’ll learn how to show up for your partner and yourself through this transition.

If you have questions about your partner’s gender transition and your role in it, you need guidance that’s more personalized than Google.

Since your partner told you they were trans, non-binary or questioning their gender, have you been cycling through the same questions?

  • What am I supposed to be doing to support my partner?
  • What does this mean for me and my relationship?
  • Where can I ask my questions? The ones that my partner can’t answer and that I don’t know who else to ask.
  • Who will pay attention to my fears and feelings without judgment or expectations?
  • Where can I go to feel less alone?
Empowered Partners is designed to help you answer the questions keeping you up at night, in a format that's way more enjoyable than falling down internet rabbit holes!

Build community in a space created for you.

As an Empowered Partners eCourse participant, you'll be invited to join quarterly Virtual Partner Meetups on Zoom. We'll get together to offer support and build community among partners who are supporting their signficant others through gender transition. (The day and time will rotate to accommodate the greatest number of partners.) You'll also have other opportunities to connect with partners who share your interests and identities in ways that feel right to you. Have an idea about how you'd like to connect with other partners? Share it! Let's see how I can help make it happen.

Imagine feeling...

  • Confidence in your knowledge about gender and transition.
  • Clarity about who and where to turn for guidance and support when you need it.
  • Connected to a support system of people who understand what you’re going through.
  • Calm about the changes unfolding in your partner and your relationship.
  • Creative about how you and your partner can navigate these changes.
  • Curious about what the future holds for your relationship.

Connect with other partners who get it.

You’re committed to your relationship, but confused about some of what your partner has shared with you. You need help sorting out your feelings, but aren't sure who you can trust to talk to. You’re anxious about how you’ll talk with your friends, family and coworkers about the changes that are coming, but don't have any support to lean on.

It's okay to be scared when faced with change. It doesn't mean you're not supportive. It may mean you haven't yet connected with the right support for you.
In the Empowered Partners eCourse, you not only get guidance about gender, sexuality and relationship skills, you'll also get connected with other partners for mutual support. Each course participant will be invited to Virtual Partner Meetups to connect with other partners like you who want to be supportive of their partners, but are confused about the next right steps to take, unsure about how to get support, and uncertain about the future. You'll also receive instant access to the ever-growing Resource List for Empowered Partners, filled with articles, books, podcasts, YouTube videos and more recommended by other partners like you.

Information + Support = Empowerment

Empowered Partners combines gender-affirming, relationship-focused education with peer support from other partners who get where you're coming from. You'll have access to group facilitation and informational resources created by a therapist with years of experience supporting transgender, non-binary and gender-questioning clients and their partners

In the Virtual Partner Meetups, you'll have space to ask your questions, express your feelings and connect one-on-one and in small groups with other supportive partners.

You’ll have lifetime access to all of the video lessons and the Resource List as soon as the course opens.

Here’s what we’ll learn about together…

Empowered Partners is designed to cover the topics many partners have questions and feelings about. These topics are divided into 5 sections, which we'll explore in the video lessons one at a time:

  1. Making Sense of Gender & Sexuality
Unpack beliefs about gender and sexuality and explore new frameworks
  2. Understanding Social, Medical & Legal Transition
Learn about options your partner may be exploring now or in the future
  3. Navigating Change & Conflict
Gather tools for moving through big feelings that can come with change
  4. Sex, Pleasure & Intimacy
Find new ways to feel connected with your partner
  5. Authenticity & Visibility
Consider what’s true for you and how you want to share it (or not) with others

This course is right for you if...

  • You’re partnered with someone who has shared with you that they are transgender, non-binary or questioning the gender they were assigned at birth.
AND
  • You have some questions, fears, or uncertainty about that information.
  • You've been struggling with your feelings about the changes your partner is experiencing.
  • You're looking for knowledgeable, non-judgmental guidance around this change.
  • You’re looking for others who can relate and offer empathy and support.

This course isn't right for you if...

  • You’ve already decided to leave your relationship with your partner, and you're firm in that decision.
  • You believe your partner’s transition accounts for all the problems in your relationship. (Gender is just one factor among many that influence our relationships.)
  • You don’t believe that trans and non-binary identities are real or valid.
  • You're under 18. This course is limited to adults 18 years or older.

Are you ready to...

  • prioritize your well-being while offering meaningful support to your transitioning partner?
  • Have a space to take your questions about gender, transition and what it all means for you? Somewhere you can get non-judgmental answers?
  • Meet other partners who get what you’re going through and want to support you through the ups and downs in your relationship?
  • Feel supported to share your feelings about your partner’s gender transition without worrying about outing them before they’re ready?
  • Practice talking about your partner’s transition with other supportive partners before you have those conversations with family and friends?

Meet Your Guide: Heather Branham, LCSW

One of my strengths is helping people find more ease and connection in their lives and in their relationships. That's what I hope to offer you.

To create this course, I drew on my personal experience as a partner as well as years of experience as a relationship-focused therapist supporting queer, trans, non-binary and gender-questioning clients and their partners. I'll also share knowledge I've gained over nearly 25 years studying the dynamics of gender and sexuality, as well as tools that support relationships. Having the right information and support can make a huge difference when you're navigating any type of change. Gender transition is no exception.

Here's what previous participants are saying...

"This group will help you feel less alone!"

"It's a great way to ensure you have the knowledge and support that you need to support yourself and your partner through their transition."

"Getting validation about what I'm going through and hearing what other people are thinking/feeling made me feel less alone."

"Just want to really thank you for putting this all together and facilitating. I've already been texting with [other partners] individually over the past few weeks and have found their support to be really helpful."

Can't I just read books about gender and talk to my friends about them?

You can! I recommend that if you have the time and the friends for it. Wading through books and articles to find the right resources for your circumstances can take a lot of time and energy that most people don't have. And unless your friends are also supporting partners who are trans, non-binary or gender-questioning, you might not get the same level of understanding you'll get from other partners in the program.

How are the Virtual Partner Meetups different from a support group?

Most support groups are led by peers who might be struggling just as much as you are. Even when they have a facilitator, many support groups aren’t structured to educate the members on the topics they need to understand to feel better about whatever they need support on. The Virtual Partner Meetups are designed to empower you with the guidance, education and support you need to offer meaningful support to your transgender, non-binary and gender-questioning partner without losing sight of your needs or the needs of your relationship.

I'm not really a fan of groups. Am I going to hate the Virtual Partner Meetups?

It's normal to feel nervous about being with people you don't know (yet). I’m careful to craft the spaces I facilitate with your experience in mind. Coming together to learn and seek support can feel incredibly vulnerable, and I take that into account in the pacing, format and group agreements that the meetups are centered around. While I can’t promise safety or comfort, I am intentional about how we come together.

The Virtual Partner Meetups are designed to ease you into the process as painlessly as possible. We'll begin by establishing group agreements that center confidentiality, consent, non-judgment, and respect. You won't be expected to share anything you don't want to share or act any way that's not authentic to you. In fact, you'll be encouraged to move slowly and intentionally, building relationships with other partners you feel drawn to through structured and facilitated conversations. Who knows? You may just meet someone you actually want to talk to outside of the meetup.

And if building community with other partners isn't why you're here, you'll still get a lot out of the video lessons, handouts, worksheets and resource list.

My situation is really unique. How do I know anyone else will get it or that I won't be judged?

Each person in this course and at the Virtual Partner Meetups will be on their own partnership journey. There will be parts of each person’s story you can relate to and parts you can’t. And that will be true for your story too.

Fear of rejection is universal, but so is the settling that comes from being heard non-judgmentally and with compassion. That's the kind of space we'll be creating together: a space where you can feel seen and heard, no matter what circumstances you find  yourself in.

If I can't make it to the Virtual Partner Meetups, will they be recorded?

Because we’ll be building relationships and sharing about personal topics, the meetups won’t be recorded. You'll learn about the next meetup at least a month in advance, and you'll get a chance to share what days and times work best for you in your time zone. Even if you can't make it to any Virtual Partner Meetups, you'll still have lifetime access to the video lessons, handouts, worksheets and the Resource List for Empowered Partners. You'll also have other opportunities to connect with partners in the course as we build the Empowered Partners online community together.

Is this group therapy? Are you my therapist now?

No. While I am a licensed therapist, the purpose of Empowered Partners is to provide education, information and peer support. I won't be giving professional or therapeutic advice or assessing, diagnosing, or treating any mental health disorder. When you sign up for Empowered Partners, you become a member of the program, not a client of mine.

My financial situation makes it impossible for me to join. Can you help?

If you want to be a part of Empowered Partners but finances are a barrier, please reach out. My hope is to make this program accessible to everyone who could use this type of support.

Do the video lessons have captions?

Yes.

What are you waiting for? It's time to prioritize support for you!
